This itinerary is designed by Oasia. Local partners verify prices, availability, safety, and operations before a booking is confirmed. It is not copied from another platform’s catalog, and it is not already field-verified.
Ala-Kul is one of Kyrgyzstan’s defining walks: a turquoise lake in a rock bowl, a steep pass, and a descent toward Altyn Arashan. It is also the trek that catalogs underplay. This journey starts with a screening conversation and a spare day in Karakol so weather and bodies can still say no. If the crossing is wrong for you, we switch to a valley walk or a night in Altyn Arashan. Reaching the lake is not a promise. Prior trekking experience is strongly recommended.
Day by day
Travel to Karakol in daylight. Meet your guide, check boots and layers, and talk honestly about recent hiking, knees, altitude, and pack weight. Early night. Overnight: Karakol.
A valley walk, not a pass. The guide watches pace and weather. If this day already feels like too much, we redesign: Altyn Arashan overnight, or a Karakol town chapter — not a forced lake. If all is well, pack for the trail and rest. Overnight: Karakol.
Transfer to the trailhead and walk toward the first camp. Days are measured by weather, group pace, and trail conditions — not by a stopwatch. Overnight: Trail camp.
Climb toward the lake. If conditions allow, time on the shore before camping nearby or continuing according to the agreed plan. Wind and cold are normal even in August. Overnight: Near Ala-Kul.
Cross the pass only if the guide says the day is safe. Descend toward Altyn Arashan. Hot springs in the evening if the valley is reachable. Turning around is a successful decision when the mountain disagrees. Overnight: Altyn Arashan.
Return toward Karakol by vehicle or on foot depending on the track. A real bed. Continue to Bishkek the same day only if energy and daylight allow — another night is often kinder. Overnight: Karakol or Bishkek.

How you travel
Accommodation. Guesthouse in Karakol, tents on the trail, and a simple valley stay at Altyn Arashan. Facilities are basic compared with city hotels. This journey includes camping.
Transportation. Road transfer to Karakol; 4x4 access toward Altyn Arashan when the track is open. Weather can close vehicle access.
Physical requirements. You should be comfortable walking 6–8 hours on steep, rocky trails with a daypack, at altitudes approaching 3,500–3,900 m. Prior multi-day trekking is strongly recommended. This is challenging, not easy, and not a first mountain trip for everyone. We will screen before we pack.
What to bring
- Worn-in trekking boots
- Warm layers, including a jacket for wind and cold at the lake
- Waterproof shell
- Sun protection and sunglasses
- Personal first-aid items and any altitude-related medication prescribed to you
Safety considerations
- Ala-Kul involves altitude, exposure on the pass, and rapidly changing mountain weather.
- Guides may turn around or change the route when conditions are unsafe.
- Travel insurance with trekking and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended and is not included unless your confirmation says otherwise.
- Oasia is not a rescue service.
Cancellation
Changes and cancellations are handled according to your written booking confirmation. Supplier rules for stays, horses, and trekking support can differ. See the cancellation policy draft and ask Oasia to confirm the terms that would apply to your dates.
Permits and route registration
Some itineraries may involve border-zone permits, park fees, or route-related paperwork depending on the season and exact route. Oasia will confirm what is relevant after a local review. Do not treat this page as a permit checklist.
